Red Mangrove Propagule

Red Mangrove Plants /  Propagule

Red mangrove plants have become popular recently with many aquarists trying to recreate the natural environment as much as possible.  Their scientific name is Rhizophora mangle. Red Mangrove grow in Florida Mangroves near the coast. These mangrove are not seeds these are call propaule and are reddish brown in appearance. They measure anywhere from 5 to 10 inches in length. These will root to sand or live rock. They require illumination which can be provided either directly from florescent lighting that has a light spectrum of 6000°-8000°K.

Red mangrove plants are perfect for lowering nitrates and phosphates in your tank and get their nutrients directly from the water. They require minimal care, just wipe of any excess salt and nutrients that they will excrete from their leaves. Also don't let dead leaves decay in the tank. Once plants take root, they will grow fairly well and can be trimmed at the tips to keep growth under control. Keep them healthy by adding iron supplements and trace elements on a regular basis.

This is an order for a single propaule; we have mangrove 5 pack for sale as well.

    The jury's still out

When I received this it was nice and green and had some leaves, albeit tiny, starting to sprout. However, I admittedly did not have adequate lighting ready to go, so while the propagule itself still looks green externally, I'm not so sure it's still viable. I had purchased this to try and pull nitrates and phosphates out of my former reef tank that I was slowly trying to repopulate. I did purchase an LED grow light which I have directed at the mangrove, so I'm hoping it'll fight the good fight and push out those leaves.
