Collection: Moray
Moray eels are the shadowy hunters of the saltwater world, lurking in rock crevices and striking with lightning speed. With their sleek bodies, powerful jaws, and unmistakable presence, these eels add an element of mystery and excitement to any aquarium. If you’re looking for a fish that commands attention, a moray eel is the perfect choice. Most Moray eels are reef safe.
Spotlight on Our Moray Eels
Moray Eels are part of the Muranenidae family which contain over 200 species that are almost exclusively marine.
Green Moray Eel
One of the largest in the family, the Green Moray (Gymnothorax funebris) can reach lengths of up to 8 feet. Its vibrant green hue isn’t actually its skin color—it’s a layer of protective mucus that gives it a glowing appearance. Best suited for very large aquariums with experienced keepers.
Chainlink Moray Eel
With a pattern resembling interlocking chains, the Chainlink Moray (Echidna catenata) is a striking mid-sized eel that reaches around 30 inches. Hardy and adaptable, it makes a great option for those looking for a moray that won’t outgrow their tank too quickly.
Snowflake Moray Eel
A fan favorite, the Snowflake Moray (Echidna nebulosa) sports a white and black speckled pattern and maxes out around 24 inches. It's one of the more peaceful moray eels, often coexisting well with similarly sized fish in a well-structured tank.
Caring for Moray Eels
Morays are intriguing but need exact planning to excel in a household aquarium.
- Diet: Strict carnivores who favor fish, squid, and shrimp.
- Tank Setup: Make sure your lid is secure—morays are known escape artists—and give them lots of crevices, rockwork, and caves to hide into.
- Behavior: While generally not aggressive toward larger fish, they will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouths.
A moray eel isn’t just another fish—it’s an experience. With their lurking presence and ambush-style feeding, they add drama and excitement to any saltwater setup. Check back often, as we’re always adding more of these incredible predators to our collection!
