Collection: Jawfish

Jawfish are the ultimate homebuilders of the saltwater world. These little engineers spend their days digging burrows, moving sand, and peeking out like tiny sentries guarding their territory. With expressive faces and curious personalities, jawfish add life and movement to the lower levels of an aquarium. They are also considered reef safe.

Spotlight on Our Jawfish

Pearly Jawfish, a.ka. Yellowhead Jawfish

The Yellowhead Jawfish (Opistognathus aurifrons) is a fan favorite, easily recognized by its bright yellow head and pale blue body. Reaching up to 4 inches, Pearly Jawfish love to hover near their burrow, popping in and out while keeping an eye on their surroundings.

Blue-Spotted Jawfish

The Blue-Spotted Jawfish (Opistognathus rosenblatti) brings a pop of color with its golden body covered in iridescent blue spots. Slightly more territorial than the Yellowhead, it thrives in well-established tanks with deep sandy substrates.

Caring for Jawfish

  • Diet: Carnivores that enjoy a mix of brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other small meaty foods.
  • Tank Setup: A deep sand bed or substrate (at least 3-5 inches) is essential for burrowing, along with scattered rubble for reinforcement.
  • Behavior: Generally peaceful, but they need space and secure burrows to feel comfortable. A tight-fitting lid is a must—they’re known for jumping.
