The Black Cap Basslet (Gramma melacara) is a striking and hardy reef fish that adds bold contrast and personality to a saltwater aquarium. Known for its deep purple body topped with a dramatic black “cap” on the head, this species has a sleek, eye-catching look that stands out beautifully against live rock and corals.
Native to deeper reef slopes in the Caribbean, the Black Cap Basslet appreciates plenty of caves and shaded areas where it can establish a home base. While generally peaceful, it can be a bit territorial toward similar-looking fish or other basslets, so providing adequate space and rockwork helps keep things harmonious. Once settled, it becomes an active and confident swimmer that’s often seen hovering upside down under ledges.
This basslet is reef safe and won’t bother corals or most invertebrates. It adapts well to aquarium life and readily accepts frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, along with high-quality pellets. A mature, well-structured tank will help this fish thrive long-term.
