The Caribbean Giant Reef Hermit Crab (Petrochirus diogenes) is an impressive and powerful addition to large saltwater aquariums. Known for its massive claws, thick legs, and commanding presence, this species adds bold character and constant activity to your tank while serving as a strong clean-up crew member.
Native to Caribbean reefs and sandy bottoms, Giant Reef Hermits spend much of their time scavenging for algae, leftover food, and detritus. They appreciate plenty of open space to move around, sturdy rockwork, and very large empty shells as they grow. While generally not aggressive, their size and strength mean they can easily knock over loose rockwork or corals and may prey on snails if underfed.
This species is extremely hardy and adapts well to aquarium life. In addition to natural scavenging, Giant Reef Hermits will readily accept algae wafers, pellets, and meaty foods such as shrimp and fish scraps. Their size, durability, and utility make them best suited for large fish-only or FOWLR systems.
