The Green Umbrella Mushroom (Discosoma neglecta) is a hardy, visually striking coral that adds vibrant color and texture to any reef aquarium. Its rounded, umbrella-shaped discs spread out gracefully, displaying a bright green coloration that pops against rockwork and substrate. While easy to care for, Umbrella Mushrooms are sensitive to poor water quality, so maintaining stable conditions is key to keeping them thriving.
These mushrooms flourish in dim lighting and will shrink or lose color if exposed to bright light for extended periods. One of their most fascinating traits is their ability to relocate themselves across the tank, using slow movements to find the perfect spot.
Native to shallow reef habitats in the Indo-Pacific, Green Umbrella Mushrooms are generally peaceful and reef safe, coexisting well with other corals and invertebrates. In addition to photosynthesis, these mushrooms are carnivorous: they capture small fish, crustaceans, or plankton using their stinging tentacles to supplement their diet. Umbrella Mushrooms also come in a range of colors, including green, brown, cream, blue, and purple, offering plenty of visual variety for your reef.
