The Midnight Parrotfish (Scarus coelestinus) brings a sleek, striking look to large marine aquariums with its rich, dark blue body that’s often accented by lighter blue patches around the head and along the flanks. This isn’t just another bright tropical fish, its deep blue tones add a bold, dramatic presence that’s hard to miss in a big tank.
Native to Caribbean reefs, this parrotfish spends its days actively grazing and swimming, displaying an engaging and lively personality. It thrives in homes with plenty of space to roam and abundant live rock for natural foraging. Because of its size and behaviors, the Midnight Parrotfish is best suited for experienced aquarists managing a large aquarium setup.
While generally peaceful with robust tankmates, this species is not reef safe. It may nibble on corals or other sessile invertebrates and needs sections of rock for scraping algae. A well-established Fish-Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) environment is ideal.
This parrotfish adapts well to captive diets when offered a variety of marine algae, spirulina-rich flake or pellet foods, and other vegetable-based preparations. Regular feedings help bring out its rich blue hues and keep it active and healthy.
