Red Mangrove Plants / Propagule
The Caribbean Red Mangrove Propagule (Rhizophora mangle) is a natural and functional addition to marine and brackish aquariums. These young mangrove shoots are instantly recognizable by their long, pencil-like shape and vibrant green coloration, bringing a true coastal look to your setup while also providing natural nutrient control.
Native to shorelines and lagoons throughout the Caribbean, Red Mangroves grow with their roots submerged and leaves above the water’s surface. In the aquarium, propagules can be placed in a sump, refugium, or display tank with the lower portion submerged and the upper portion exposed to air and light. As they grow, they develop sturdy roots that help absorb nitrates, phosphates, and other dissolved nutrients from the water.
Red Mangrove Propagules are completely reef safe and do not pose any risk to fish, corals, or invertebrates. In addition to their filtration benefits, they offer shelter and shade for small fish and invertebrates while adding a unique, natural aesthetic that evolves as the plant matures.
These mangroves require strong lighting and access to air for healthy leaf growth. Occasional misting or rinsing of the leaves can help prevent salt buildup. With patience and proper care, Red Mangrove Propagules can grow into an attractive and beneficial long-term component of a saltwater system.
