Slippery Dick (Halichoeres bivittatus)

The Slippery Dick (Halichoeres bivittatus) is a hardy and energetic Caribbean wrasse known for its streamlined body, active swimming behavior, and subtle yet attractive coloration. Featuring shades of tan, yellow, green, and blue with distinctive horizontal striping that becomes more vibrant as the fish matures, this species brings constant movement and natural beauty to any saltwater aquarium.

Native to the tropical reefs and seagrass beds of the Caribbean and western Atlantic, the Slippery Dick spends its days foraging among live rock and sandy areas for small crustaceans, worms, and other meaty prey. This wrasse thrives in aquariums with plenty of open swimming space, abundant rockwork, and a sand bed where it can bury itself to sleep or seek refuge when startled. It is generally peaceful with most community fish but may become territorial toward other wrasses, particularly in smaller aquariums.

The Slippery Dick is considered reef safe with caution. While it is unlikely to disturb corals, it may prey on small ornamental shrimp, feather dusters, tiny crabs, snails, and other delicate invertebrates. Hardy and easy to care for, this species readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets once acclimated. Its durability, active personality, and useful foraging behavior make it an excellent choice for both fish-only and larger reef aquariums.
