Swissguard Basslet

The Swissguard Basslet (Liopropoma rubre) is a stunning little showpiece that brings bold color without the bold attitude. With its vibrant red body accented by clean white striping and electric-blue highlights around the eyes, this fish really pops, especially in reef aquariums with plenty of rockwork.

Native to deeper Caribbean reefs, the Swissguard Basslet is naturally shy and prefers caves and overhangs where it can feel secure. Once settled in, it becomes more confident and can often be seen hovering near its favorite hideout, darting out for food. Its peaceful nature makes it a great choice for community reef tanks with other calm, non-aggressive fish.

This species is considered reef safe and won’t bother corals, though very tiny ornamental shrimp may be at risk. The Swissguard Basslet does best in a well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and subdued lighting during acclimation. It readily accepts frozen foods like mysis and brine shrimp, and can usually be trained to eat high-quality pellets.
