Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus)
The Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) is one of the Caribbean's most iconic reef fish, prized for its brilliant electric blue coloration and graceful swimming behavior. Juveniles begin life as bright yellow fish before gradually transforming into the vivid blue adults that make this species a stunning centerpiece in larger marine aquariums.
Native to the coral reefs of the Caribbean and western Atlantic, the Atlantic Blue Tang spends much of its day grazing on algae growing across rocks and reef surfaces. This constant grazing behavior helps contribute to a healthier aquarium by naturally controlling nuisance algae. Active and constantly on the move, this species thrives in spacious aquariums with plenty of open swimming room, abundant live rock, and excellent water quality. While generally peaceful with most tankmates, it may become territorial toward other tangs, especially those with a similar body shape.
The Atlantic Blue Tang is considered reef safe and is an excellent addition to reef aquariums. Its diet should consist primarily of marine algae, seaweed, and other vegetable-based foods, supplemented with high-quality frozen preparations and occasional meaty foods to maintain vibrant coloration and overall health. Hardy once established and full of personality, this species is an outstanding choice for experienced hobbyists with appropriately sized aquariums.
