The Atlantic Gray Cowrie (Luria cinerea) is a beautiful and unique marine snail prized for its smooth, glossy shell and subtle gray-to-tan coloration often accented with darker mottling. Its polished, porcelain-like appearance makes it a standout addition to reef aquariums, especially for hobbyists looking to add something a little different beyond typical cleanup crew species.
Native to the warm waters of the Atlantic and Caribbean, the Atlantic Gray Cowrie is most active at night, spending its days tucked away under rocks or within crevices. As a nocturnal grazer, it helps clean the aquarium by feeding on algae, biofilm, and detritus found on rock surfaces. Occasionally, it may also graze on sponges or soft growths, so placement in reef tanks with delicate invertebrates should be monitored.
This species is generally peaceful and does well in established aquariums with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Like other cowries, it has a mantle that can extend over its shell, which not only protects it but also enhances its striking appearance when fully displayed.
The Atlantic Gray Cowrie is relatively hardy once acclimated but benefits from stable water parameters and a mature tank with natural food sources. Supplemental feeding with algae-based foods can help ensure long-term health in cleaner systems.
