The Atlantic Thrush Cowrie (Naria turdus) is a striking and highly sought-after marine snail known for its smooth, glossy shell covered in intricate brown, tan, and cream speckled patterns. Its elegant, polished appearance and active grazing behavior make it both a functional and decorative addition to saltwater aquariums.
Native to the Caribbean and western Atlantic, the Atlantic Thrush Cowrie is primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden among live rock and emerging at night to forage. It feeds on algae, biofilm, and detritus, helping to naturally maintain clean rock surfaces. Like other cowries, it extends a fleshy mantle over its shell, which not only protects it but also enhances its vivid coloration when fully displayed.
This species is generally peaceful and does well in established aquariums with plenty of rockwork for hiding and grazing. While considered mostly reef safe, caution is advised, as it may occasionally graze on sponges or soft corals if natural food sources are limited.
The Atlantic Thrush Cowrie is hardy once acclimated and thrives in stable systems with ample natural growth. Supplemental feeding with algae-based foods can help support its dietary needs in cleaner or newer tanks.
