The Caribbean Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus) is one of the most eye-catching and iconic invertebrates in the saltwater hobby. Known for its bold red-and-white banded body, long flowing white antennae, and striking appearance, this shrimp adds instant visual interest and personality to any reef or fish-only aquarium.
Native to Caribbean and Western Atlantic reefs, the Banded Coral Shrimp prefers rocky environments with caves, overhangs, and crevices where it can establish a territory. It’s most active during the evening and is often seen perched upside down under ledges or boldly displaying its antennae. While generally peaceful toward fish, it can be territorial toward other shrimp, especially similar species, so it’s best kept singly or as a bonded pair in larger systems.
This species is reef safe and will not harm corals. It also serves a functional role in the aquarium, often acting as a cleaner shrimp by picking parasites and dead tissue from fish. Hardy and long-lived when properly cared for, the Caribbean Banded Coral Shrimp readily accepts a diet of meaty frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
