Hand-collected by our team, the Basket Star (Astrophyton muricatum) is one of the most extraordinary echinoderms available to marine aquarists. Native to the Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic, this remarkable species is famous for its intricate, highly branched arms that unfurl into a delicate basket-like structure after dark to capture plankton from the water column. During the day, Basket Stars typically remain hidden beneath ledges or within caves, making their dramatic nighttime feeding behavior a truly unforgettable sight.

Basket Stars require mature, stable aquariums with moderate to strong water flow, abundant rockwork, and regular feedings of fine planktonic foods. Due to their specialized feeding requirements and sensitivity to water quality, they are best suited for experienced marine hobbyists.

Reef Compatibility

Reef Aquarium: Excellent addition to mature reef aquariums with established plankton populations and appropriate water flow.

Corals: Completely reef safe. Basket Stars do not feed on or damage soft, LPS, or SPS corals.

Fish Tank Mates: Peaceful and compatible with most reef-safe fish. Avoid aggressive or predatory species such as triggers, puffers, large wrasses, or hawkfish that may pick at the delicate arms. Planktivorous fish are generally compatible, though heavy competition for suspended foods should be considered during feeding.

Sensitive Invertebrates: Safe with ornamental shrimp, snails, hermit crabs, feather dusters, clams, and other peaceful reef invertebrates. Their delicate branching arms should be protected from animals that may nip or climb excessively on them.

The Basket Star is recommended only for experienced marine aquarists with mature reef aquariums. Long-term success depends on maintaining exceptional water quality, stable salinity, appropriate water flow, and providing frequent feedings of appropriately sized planktonic foods, particularly after lights out when the animal naturally feeds. Like all echinoderms, Basket Stars are highly sensitive to rapid changes in water chemistry and require slow drip acclimation before introduction.
