Black Leg Hermit Crab

The Caribbean Black Leg Hermit Crab (Clibanarius vittatus) is a sturdy and hard-working addition to saltwater aquariums. Known for its dark legs with bold white banding and active scavenging behavior, this hermit crab adds both visual interest and dependable clean-up power to your tank.

Native to Caribbean reefs, sandy flats, and rocky shorelines, Black Leg Hermits spend much of their time grazing on algae, leftover food, and detritus. They appreciate plenty of live rock to explore, a sandy substrate, and extra empty shells to reduce competition. While generally peaceful, they can become opportunistic toward snails if underfed or short on shells.

This species is very hardy and adapts easily to aquarium life. In addition to naturally occurring algae, Black Leg Hermits will readily accept algae wafers, pellets, and occasional meaty foods. Their durability, active nature, and usefulness as part of a clean-up crew make them a solid choice for reef and fish-only systems.
