Clown Wrasse (Halichoeres maculipinna)

The Clown Wrasse (Halichoeres maculipinna) is a vibrant Caribbean wrasse admired for its striking blend of yellow, blue, green, and orange markings. Its bold coloration, active swimming behavior, and curious personality make it a beautiful addition to larger saltwater aquariums, where it is constantly on the move exploring every inch of the rockwork.

Native to the tropical reefs of the Caribbean and western Atlantic, the Clown Wrasse spends its days hunting for small crustaceans and other meaty prey among live rock and sandy bottoms. This species thrives in aquariums with plenty of open swimming space, ample rockwork for foraging, and a sand bed where it can bury itself at night or when frightened. It is generally peaceful with most community fish but may show territorial behavior toward other wrasses, particularly in smaller tanks.

The Clown Wrasse is considered reef safe with caution. While it will not bother corals, it may prey on small ornamental shrimp, feather dusters, tiny crabs, snails, and other delicate invertebrates. Hardy and adaptable, it readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets once acclimated. Its vivid colors, active nature, and ease of care make it an excellent choice for intermediate and experienced marine hobbyists alike.
