The Dusky Squirrelfish (Neoniphon vexillarium) is a striking nocturnal species that adds bold color and intriguing behavior to larger saltwater aquariums. Its body is a deep reddish-orange with a silvery underside, accented by dark fins and large, reflective eyes that give it a distinctive “watchful” look, perfect for adding contrast to reef tanks or fish-only setups.
Native to Caribbean and western Atlantic reefs, Dusky Squirrelfish are typically found hiding in crevices or under ledges during the day, emerging at night to feed. In the aquarium, they thrive in tanks with plenty of rockwork, caves, and shaded areas to retreat into, making them excellent additions for aquarists who enjoy observing natural nocturnal behaviors. While generally peaceful with other mid- to upper-level swimmers, they may be territorial toward similarly shaped fish in confined spaces.
Dusky Squirrelfish are reef safe with care, generally leaving corals and larger invertebrates alone. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or prepared diets. With proper care and a spacious tank, these hardy, visually captivating fish provide dynamic nighttime activity and a touch of Caribbean reef authenticity.
