The Caribbean Emerald Crab (Mithraculus sculptus) is a popular and useful addition to saltwater aquariums. Known for its bright emerald-green coloration and compact body, this small crab is prized for both its unique appearance and its role in helping control nuisance algae.
Native to Caribbean reefs and rocky shorelines, Emerald Crabs appreciate plenty of live rock with crevices to hide and forage. They are generally peaceful and spend much of their time grazing on algae, especially bubble algae, making them a helpful member of a clean-up crew. As they grow, they should be monitored, as very large individuals may opportunistically pick at corals or small invertebrates if underfed.
This species is hardy and adapts well to aquarium life. In addition to naturally occurring algae, Emerald Crabs will accept supplemental foods such as algae wafers, pellets, and small meaty offerings. Their small size, bright color, and utility make them a great choice for reef and fish-only systems alike.
