The Gray Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) is a bold and intriguing addition to large saltwater aquariums. Known for its distinctive oval-shaped body and strong, laterally compressed profile, this species displays a soft gray to bluish-gray body with subtle darker markings along the fins and tail. Its unique shape and purposeful swimming style make it an eye-catching centerpiece in spacious setups.
Native to reefs and rocky areas of the western Atlantic and Caribbean, Gray Triggerfish are naturally active and inquisitive. They are hardy and intelligent fish that often interact with their environment, exploring crevices and investigating food. While generally peaceful toward larger tankmates, they can show territorial behavior, especially toward smaller or slow-moving fish.
This species is not reef safe, as it may nip at corals, invertebrates, and other tank inhabitants. In captivity, a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen preparations is recommended to maintain health and coloration. When provided with ample swimming space, secure rockwork, and proper nutrition, Gray Triggerfish are engaging, long-lived fish that add movement, personality, and an unmistakable reef presence to large aquariums.
