The Green Blotch Parrotfish (Sparisoma atomarium) is a vibrant and active herbivore that brings striking color and constant movement to large saltwater aquariums. This species features a predominantly green body with irregular, darker blotches scattered along the sides, along with subtle hints of yellow or turquoise on the fins, creating a unique and eye-catching appearance that stands out among other parrotfish.
Native to Caribbean reefs and the western Atlantic, Green Blotch Parrotfish are naturally active grazers, constantly browsing algae and surfaces much like they do in the wild. In the aquarium, they thrive in spacious tanks with ample swimming room and plenty of live rock for exploration. While generally peaceful with other fish, they may show mild territorial behavior toward similarly sized herbivores if the tank is crowded.
Like most parrotfish, this species is not reef safe, as its grazing habits can damage live corals and sessile invertebrates. In captivity, a diet rich in marine algae, nori, spirulina, and vegetable-based frozen foods helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Hardy and visually striking, the Green Blotch Parrotfish provides constant activity and a splash of Caribbean reef authenticity for experienced hobbyists with the space to accommodate its size.
