"Green" Serpent Starfish

Green Serpent Starfish (Ophiarachna incrassata)

Hand-collected by our team, the Green Serpent Starfish (Ophiarachna incrassata) is a striking and active echinoderm known for its vibrant green coloration, long flexible arms, and fascinating nocturnal behavior. Native to our Florida Keys waters, this species is one of the largest serpent starfish commonly kept in marine aquariums. It spends much of its day hidden beneath rockwork before emerging at night to explore the aquarium in search of food.

Unlike many peaceful serpent starfish species, the Green Serpent Starfish is an opportunistic predator as well as a scavenger. While it helps consume detritus, leftover food, and organic matter, it may actively hunt small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Due to its predatory nature, careful consideration should be given before adding this species to a community aquarium.

Green Serpent Starfish thrive in mature aquariums with stable water parameters, plenty of live rock, and adequate hiding spaces. Their impressive size, unique appearance, and active behavior make them a fascinating addition for experienced marine aquarists.

Reef Compatibility

Reef Aquarium: Not recommended for reef aquariums. Green Serpent Starfish are opportunistic predators and may consume desirable reef inhabitants, including small fish, ornamental shrimp, and other invertebrates.

Corals: Generally safe with corals, including soft, LPS, and SPS species. However, their predatory behavior toward other livestock makes them unsuitable for most reef systems.

Fish Tank Mates: Best kept with larger, robust fish that are unlikely to be targeted as prey. Suitable companions may include larger tangs, angelfish, groupers, and other similarly sized fish. Avoid housing with small gobies, firefish, blennies, small wrasses, or other slow-moving fish that may be vulnerable.

Sensitive Invertebrates: Not compatible with most ornamental invertebrates. Green Serpent Starfish may prey on shrimp, small crabs, snails, and other desirable invertebrates. They should be housed only with larger, non-delicate tank mates that cannot easily be consumed.

While hardy once established, it requires stable water conditions, a mature aquarium, and regular feedings of appropriate meaty foods to thrive.

Like all echinoderms, it is sensitive to rapid changes in salinity and water chemistry, making slow drip acclimation essential. With proper planning and suitable tank mates, the Green Serpent Starfish can become a unique and impressive addition to a large fish-only marine aquarium.
