Knobby Red Starfish
The Knobby Red Starfish (Echinaster echinophorus), sometimes referred to as the Red Thorny Sea Star, is a striking Caribbean sea star recognized for its vivid red to orange coloration and distinctive knobby texture. Native to the tropical western Atlantic and Haitian waters, this unique echinoderm slowly explores live rock and aquarium surfaces while grazing on naturally occurring biofilm, microbial growth, and encrusting organisms. Its bold appearance and unusual texture make it a standout display animal in mature marine aquariums.
Red Knobby Starfish require established aquariums with stable water parameters and abundant live rock to provide natural grazing opportunities. While hardy under proper conditions, they are more specialized than many clean-up crew species and are best kept in mature systems with consistent water quality.
Quick Facts
- Care Level: Moderate
- Temperament: Peaceful
- Maximum Size: Approximately 8 inches across
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
- Diet: Biofilm, microbial growth, encrusting organisms
- Reef Safe: With Caution
Reef Compatibility
Reef Aquarium: Suitable for mature reef aquariums with plentiful natural food sources.
Corals: Generally considered safe with most soft, LPS, and SPS corals. While they do not typically consume healthy coral tissue, they may graze on encrusting organisms growing around rockwork and coral bases. Observation is recommended in mixed reef aquariums.
Fish Tank Mates: Peaceful and compatible with most reef-safe fish, including clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, wrasses, and tangs. Avoid housing with predatory species such as triggers, puffers, large wrasses, or hawkfish that may injure or prey upon the starfish.
Sensitive Invertebrates: Compatible with most peaceful reef invertebrates, including snails, hermit crabs, and ornamental shrimp. Avoid aggressive crabs or other predators that may harass the starfish. Due to their specialized diet, they should not be relied upon as a primary member of a cleanup crew.
Experience Level
Intermediate
The Red Knobby Starfish is best suited for aquarists with established marine aquariums. Success depends on maintaining stable salinity, excellent water quality, and a mature system capable of supporting its natural grazing habits. Like all sea stars, it is highly sensitive to rapid changes in water chemistry, making slow drip acclimation essential.
With its vibrant coloration, distinctive knobby appearance, and slow, deliberate movements, the Red Knobby Starfish is a beautiful showcase specimen for experienced reef hobbyists seeking a unique Caribbean echinoderm.
This species cannot handle air exposure, and should be managed with care.
