The Longnose Atlantic Butterfly (Prognathodes aculeatus) is a unique and elegant addition to a larger saltwater aquarium. Its elongated snout, paired with a striking color pattern of deep yellow body, black bands, and subtle white accents, gives it a distinct look that sets it apart from other butterflyfish. This long-nosed beauty is perfectly designed for picking small invertebrates from crevices in the wild—and it carries that same charm in your tank.
Native to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, the Longnose Atlantic Butterfly is a shy but fascinating species that appreciates plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding spots. It’s generally peaceful toward other fish, though it may be slightly territorial toward similar-shaped species. Watching it hover delicately near rockwork makes it a rewarding fish for hobbyists who enjoy observing natural behaviors.
Like most butterflyfish, this species is not reef safe. It may nip at corals, anemones, or other sessile invertebrates, so it’s best kept in a fish-only or FOWLR setup. In captivity, it adapts well to a diet of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish. A mature, stable aquarium helps this species thrive and display its best colors.
