The Mexican Red Leg Hermit Crab (Clibanarius digueti) is a hardy and colorful addition to saltwater aquariums. Known for its bright red legs with subtle banding and constant scavenging behavior, this active hermit crab adds both visual appeal and practical clean-up power to your tank.

Native to the eastern Pacific and commonly found on rocky shorelines and reef flats, Red Leg Hermits spend their time grazing on algae, leftover food, and detritus. They appreciate plenty of live rock to explore, a sandy substrate, and extra empty shells to prevent competition. While generally peaceful, they may pick at snails if suitable shells are not available.

This species is very hardy and adapts easily to aquarium life. In addition to naturally occurring algae, Mexican Red Leg Hermits readily accept algae wafers, pellets, and other supplemental foods. Their small size, bold coloration, and usefulness as part of a clean-up crew make them a popular choice for reef and fish-only systems.
