The Caribbean Pork Fish Grunt (Anisotremus virginicus) is a bold and eye-catching addition to large saltwater aquariums. Known for its bright yellow facial stripes, silver body, and active swimming behavior, this species brings a true Caribbean reef presence to your tank. Its common name comes from the low “grunting” sound it can produce by grinding its teeth, most often during feeding.
Native to Caribbean reefs and sandy bottoms, Porkfish thrive in spacious aquariums with plenty of open swimming room and some rockwork for shelter. They are generally peaceful but can become assertive as they mature, so they are best kept with other similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates.
This species is hardy once established and adapts well to captivity. Porkfish readily accept a carnivorous diet of meaty frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared foods. Their size, activity level, and personality make them a great choice for experienced hobbyists with large fish-only or FOWLR systems.
