The Princess Parrotfish (Scarus taeniopterus) is a standout Caribbean reef fish that brings bright color and constant activity to large saltwater aquariums. Adults often show a bluish to greenish body with subtle hints of yellow near the pectoral area and soft pastel tones along the fins, creating a smooth, tropical palette that’s eye‑catching without being overwhelming. Males may also display delicate blue stripes around the eye region, adding extra detail to their appearance.

Native to reefs throughout the Caribbean, Bahamas, Florida, and Bermuda, Princess Parrotfish are active grazing fish that spend much of their day picking at algae and surfaces just like they would in the wild. In the aquarium, they thrive in spacious systems with plenty of open water to swim through and robust rockwork to explore. While generally peaceful, they can show mild territorial behavior with tankmates of similar size or grazing habits if the space is limited.

This species is not reef safe, as its natural grazing behavior can damage live corals and delicate sessile invertebrates. In captivity, a varied diet rich in marine algae and greens — such as nori, spirulina, and algae sheets — supplemented with vegetable‑based frozen foods will help maintain both health and coloration. With proper care, the Princess Parrotfish’s bold swimming style and soft yet vivid hues become a lively highlight in large aquariums.
