Puddingwife Wrasse (Halichoeres radiatus)

The Puddingwife Wrasse (Halichoeres radiatus) is a large, striking Caribbean wrasse admired for its bold coloration and active personality. Juveniles display a brilliant yellow-orange body with black markings, while adults develop rich shades of green, blue, and bronze accented by vibrant facial markings. Its dramatic color transformation and constant activity make it a standout centerpiece in larger saltwater aquariums.

Native to the coral reefs and rocky habitats of the Caribbean and western Atlantic, the Puddingwife Wrasse spends its days searching for small crustaceans, mollusks, worms, and other meaty prey. This species thrives in aquariums with plenty of live rock for foraging, open swimming space, and a sand bed where it can bury itself at night or when startled. While generally peaceful with larger community fish, it may become territorial toward other wrasses and should be housed with appropriately sized tankmates.

The Puddingwife Wrasse is considered reef safe with caution. Although it will not harm corals, it may prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, feather dusters, and other small invertebrates. Hardy and adaptable, this species readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, clam, squid, and high-quality prepared foods once acclimated. Its intelligence, vibrant appearance, and energetic behavior make it an excellent choice for experienced hobbyists with spacious marine aquariums.
