The Caribbean Red Banded Parrotfish (Sparisoma aurofrenatum) is an eye-catching and active species that brings natural reef behavior and evolving coloration to larger saltwater aquariums. As seen in the photo, this fish displays earthy tones with noticeable reddish banding and subtle patterning that gives it a rugged, reef-dwelling look. Its appearance becomes more refined as it matures, making it an interesting fish to watch over time.

Native to Caribbean reefs, the Red Banded Parrotfish spends much of its day grazing across rock surfaces in search of algae. In the aquarium, it thrives in setups with plenty of live rock and open swimming space. Juveniles often show stronger contrast in their markings, while adults tend to develop smoother blends of color with more defined red accents, especially around the head and body.

This species is generally peaceful but is not considered reef safe. Like other parrotfish, it uses its beak-like mouth to scrape algae and may disturb corals or sessile invertebrates in the process. A Fish Only With Live Rock system is the best environment for long-term success.

The Caribbean Red Banded Parrotfish adapts well to captive diets and should be fed a variety of algae-based foods, spirulina flakes or pellets, and occasional frozen offerings. A consistent feeding routine helps support healthy coloration and active behavior.
