The Royal Gramma Basslet (Gramma loreto) is a true classic in the saltwater hobby and one of the most recognizable reef fish available. With its vibrant purple front half that fades into bright golden yellow toward the tail, this fish adds an instant pop of color to almost any aquarium.
Native to Caribbean reefs, the Royal Gramma prefers plenty of live rock with caves and crevices where it can claim a small territory. It’s generally peaceful and does very well in community reef tanks, though it may show mild territorial behavior toward similar-shaped fish if space is limited. One of its most charming traits is its tendency to hover upside down under ledges or dart back into its favorite cave when startled.
This species is fully reef safe and won’t bother corals or most invertebrates. The Royal Gramma is hardy, adapts well to captive life, and readily accepts frozen foods like mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, along with high-quality pellets and flakes once acclimated. Its durability and manageable size make it a great choice for both beginner and experienced hobbyists.
