Shy Hamlet

The Caribbean Shy Hamlet (Hypoplectrus guttavarius) is a charming and subtle addition to saltwater aquariums. Known for its soft tan to brown body with delicate pale spots and muted vertical bars, this species adds understated elegance and a gentle Caribbean reef presence to your tank.

Native to Caribbean reefs and rocky areas, Shy Hamlets appreciate plenty of live rock with caves and crevices where they can feel secure and retreat when needed. True to their name, they are often reserved at first, but become more confident as they acclimate to their surroundings. They are generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish but may be territorial with other hamlets or very small tank mates.

This species is hardy and adapts well to captivity, readily accepting a carnivorous diet of meaty frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, along with high-quality prepared foods. Its manageable size, subtle beauty, and calm demeanor make it a great choice for hobbyists with established reef or fish-only systems.
