The Caribbean Spotfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ocellatus) is a striking and graceful species that adds classic butterflyfish elegance to larger saltwater aquariums. Its bright yellow body is accented with thin vertical striping, a bold black “eye spot” near the rear of the body, and a noticeable dark blotch on the dorsal fin, giving it a dramatic and easily recognizable appearance.
Native to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, the Spotfin Butterflyfish is an active, open-water swimmer that thrives in spacious aquariums with plenty of swimming room and live rock for shelter. It has a generally peaceful temperament and does well with other non-aggressive, similarly sized fish, making it a great choice for community fish-only or FOWLR setups.
Like most butterflyfish, this species is not reef safe, as it may nip at corals, anemones, and other sessile invertebrates. With proper care, it adapts well to captive diets that include frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish. Stable water conditions and a mature tank are key to long-term success.
