Sunshine Damselfish (Chromis insolata)
The Sunshine Damselfish (Chromis insolata) is a brilliantly colored Caribbean reef fish prized for its vibrant golden-yellow body accented with electric blue highlights around the face and fins. Native to the tropical reefs of Florida and the Caribbean, this hardy species adds constant activity, bold color, and personality to both reef aquariums and fish-only marine systems. If you're looking for a Sunshine Damselfish, this species is an excellent choice for hobbyists seeking a beautiful, active fish that is both durable and easy to care for.
Unlike many damselfish, the Sunshine Damselfish is generally less aggressive than its close relatives, especially when provided with ample swimming space and plenty of rockwork for establishing territories. Their curious nature and active swimming behavior make them a standout centerpiece in medium to large marine aquariums.

Reef Compatibility
Reef Aquarium: Excellent choice for reef aquariums. The Sunshine Damselfish is completely reef safe and will not damage corals or other sessile invertebrates.
Corals: Safe with soft corals, LPS, SPS, zoanthids, mushrooms, and other coral species.
Fish Tank Mates: Compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, blennies, basslets, cardinalfish, dwarf angelfish, and other moderately peaceful marine fish. Because they can become territorial as they mature, they are best added after more peaceful species have established themselves. Avoid housing with highly aggressive damselfish or large predatory fish that may view them as prey.
Sensitive Invertebrates: Completely safe with cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, hermit crabs, snails, sea stars, urchins, and other common reef invertebrates.
Experience Level
Beginner
The Sunshine Damselfish is an excellent beginner saltwater fish thanks to its hardiness, disease resistance, and straightforward care requirements. It adapts well to established marine aquariums with stable water parameters and appreciates plenty of live rock where it can explore and establish a territory. Regular feedings of a varied omnivorous diet will help maintain its brilliant yellow and blue coloration.
With its striking appearance, active personality, and reef-safe nature, the Sunshine Damselfish (Chromis insolata) is a fantastic addition to reef aquariums and fish-only marine tanks. Whether you're building your first saltwater aquarium or expanding an established reef, this colorful Caribbean species delivers lasting beauty and nonstop activity.
