The Caribbean Surgeon Tang (Acanthurus bahianus / Acanthurus chirurgus) is a vibrant and active fish that brings color, movement, and personality to large marine aquariums. Its sleek body displays shades of deep blue to bluish-gray with subtle yellow accents near the tail and distinctive sharp “scalpels” on either side of the caudal peduncle, giving it its classic surgeonfish look.

Native to reefs and rocky shorelines throughout the Caribbean, this tang is a constant grazer, spending much of the day browsing algae across rocks and surfaces. In the aquarium, it thrives with plenty of swimming space and robust live rock for grazing. It is an energetic species that adds life and activity to any tank, making it a true centerpiece for larger setups.

The Caribbean Surgeon Tang is generally peaceful toward other species but can show territorial behavior toward other tangs, especially in smaller tanks. It is reef safe with caution, as it may nip at certain corals or clams if not well-fed, though most individuals coexist peacefully in a well-established reef environment.

This species readily adapts to captive diets, thriving on a mix of marine algae, spirulina-based flakes or pellets, and occasional meaty foods. Regular feedings help maintain vibrant coloration and overall health. Because of its active swimming habits and size, it is best suited for experienced aquarists managing a tank of at least 125 gallons.
