Yellowhead Wrasse (Halichoeres garnoti)

The Yellowhead Wrasse (Halichoeres garnoti) is a stunning Caribbean reef fish known for its brilliant electric blue body and vibrant yellow head. Its striking coloration, active swimming behavior, and hardy nature make it a favorite among saltwater hobbyists looking to add both movement and color to their aquarium.

Native to the reefs of the Caribbean and western Atlantic, the Yellowhead Wrasse spends its days actively searching the rockwork for small crustaceans and other meaty foods. This species appreciates an aquarium with plenty of live rock, open swimming space, and a sand bed where it can bury itself at night or when startled. Generally peaceful toward most tankmates, it may become territorial with other wrasses or similarly shaped fish, especially in smaller aquariums.

The Yellowhead Wrasse is considered reef safe with caution. While it typically leaves corals untouched, it may prey on small ornamental shrimp, feather dusters, tiny crabs, and other delicate invertebrates. Hardy and easy to feed, this species readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets once acclimated. Its beautiful coloration, active personality, and adaptability make it an excellent addition to larger reef and fish-only marine aquariums.
