Hand-collected by our team, the Harlequin Serpent Starfish (Ophioderma appressum) is a striking Caribbean echinoderm known for its bold banded pattern and graceful, snake-like arms. Native to the tropical western Atlantic and Florida waters, this active scavenger spends its time exploring live rock, sand, and crevices in search of detritus, biofilm, and leftover food. Its distinctive harlequin coloration and constant movement make it one of the most eye-catching serpent starfish available for marine aquariums.

Harlequin Serpent Starfish thrive in mature aquariums with stable water parameters, ample live rock, and plenty of places to hide during the day. Peaceful, hardy, and beneficial as part of a clean-up crew, they are an excellent addition to both reef and fish-only marine systems.

Reef Compatibility

Reef Aquarium: Excellent choice for reef aquariums.

Corals: Completely safe with soft, LPS, and SPS corals. Harlequin Serpent Starfish do not consume healthy coral tissue.

Fish Tank Mates: Peaceful and compatible with most reef-safe fish, including clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, wrasses, and tangs. Avoid keeping with large predatory fish such as triggers, puffers, large wrasses, or hawkfish, which may injure or prey upon the starfish.

Sensitive Invertebrates: Generally safe with snails, hermit crabs, cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, and other common reef invertebrates. Healthy invertebrates are typically ignored, though the starfish will readily consume deceased animals and leftover food as part of its natural scavenging behavior.

The Harlequin Serpent Starfish is a hardy species well suited for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists. Like all sea stars, it should only be introduced into established aquariums with stable salinity and water chemistry. Slow drip acclimation is strongly recommended, as echinoderms are particularly sensitive to rapid changes in water parameters.
