Brittle Stars and Serpent Stars: Your Reef Tank’s Best Cleanup Crew

Ask a new reef keeper to picture a starfish and you’ll usually get a Blue Linckia or a Chocolate Chip Star. Both are beautiful animals. Both are also a poor bet in a reef tank. The Linckia starves slowly on a diet most home systems can’t replicate, and the Chocolate Chip will eventually decide your zoas look like dinner.

The starfish that actually belong in a reef tank are the ones nobody photographs. Brittle stars and serpent stars spend daylight hours wedged into rockwork and do their work after the lights go out, clearing the gaps your snails can’t reach and the sandbed layers your hermits ignore. They’re inexpensive, hardy, and long-lived, which is not a combination this hobby offers often.

The complication is naming. “Brittle star” and “serpent star” cover hundreds of species, and one of them has an earned reputation for eating fish. That reputation gets applied to all of them, which is where most of the confusion starts.

What follows comes out of collecting these animals in the Keys myself and holding them in our own systems before they ship. Where the standard hobby advice and what I actually see diverge, I have said so, including on two of the sea stars we sell.

Brittle Star vs. Serpent Star vs. Sea Star

These three names get used interchangeably in the trade, and they shouldn’t be. Reef safety and care both hinge on which group you’re actually holding.

Brittle Stars

Brittle stars are in Class Ophiuroidea. Five long, whippy arms come off a small central disc, and the arms are visibly segmented with spines running along them. That spiny texture is the giveaway. They move fast, in a snaking motion that catches people off guard the first time they see it under a flashlight.

Under stress, a brittle star will lose an arm on purpose. This is called autotomy, and it’s a defense response, not a symptom of actual stress. Sudden salinity shifts, rough handling, and harassment from a tankmate can all trigger it. The arm regrows over several weeks in stable water. Finding a loose arm in your tank is not a death sentence.

These brittle starfish are nocturnal almost without exception. During the day the star stays tucked in a crevice with the arms folded underneath.

Serpent Stars

Serpent stars are brittle stars. Same class, same biology. The only real difference is that serpent star arms are smooth and rounded rather than spiny, which gives them a snakelike look and the name that goes with it.

Behavior, water requirements, cleanup role, reef safety: functionally the same. If someone tells you serpent stars are safer or hardier than brittle stars as a category, they’re describing appearance, not biology.

Sea Stars

Sea stars (Class Asteroidea) are the “true” starfish, with thick arms fused to a wide central body. They move slowly on hydraulic tube feet. Diet varies enormously across the group and reef safety varies with it. Some graze biofilm. Some eat coral tissue. Caribbean sea stars sit in a different care bracket entirely, and we cover them separately below.

What They Actually Do in a Cleanup Crew

Brittle and serpent stars occupy a niche no other sea creature in a standard cleanup crew fills. They are substrate-level, rockwork-penetrating, nocturnal detritus processors, which sounds technical but comes down to three practical things.

They reach places nothing else reaches. A brittle star arm can snake into a one-centimeter gap in your live rock and pull detritus back out. Hermits can’t fit. Snails can’t get the angle. Urchins graze surfaces, not interiors. The organic waste packing into tight rockwork spaces is a slow nitrate source most keepers never see, and it’s this animal’s main food.

They work the night shift. Snails and hermits are busy under your lights. Brittle and serpent stars come out after dark, once the day’s uneaten food has settled. By morning it’s gone.

They keep the upper sandbed loose. Movement through the top layer slows compaction and reduces the anaerobic pockets where hydrogen sulfide accumulates. That’s a side effect of normal foraging rather than something the animal sets out to do, but the benefit is real in a mature tank.

What they don’t do is graze algae. They won’t clean your glass, won’t touch hair algae on rockwork, won’t help with cyano. A complete crew still needs snails for surface algae, hermit crabs for surface detritus, and urchins for the tougher rockwork growth. Brittle and serpent stars handle the layer underneath all of it.

Serpent Starfish

Care level: Beginner • Reef safe: Yes • Arm span: 6–10 inches

The serpent starfish is a workhorse. Smooth-armed, unfussy, and the one we recommend most often to people adding their first starfish. It settles into rockwork within a day or two and starts working the substrate that night. In an established tank with normal fish feeding, it finds its own food and needs nothing from you. Honestly, it's the lowest-maintenance animal we sell.

Brittle Starfish

Care level: Beginner Reef safe: Yes Arm span: 8–10 inches

The classic spiny-armed Caribbean brittle star, most often an Ophiocoma species and typically O. wendtii in Keys collections. These live in rubble zones at the base of reef structure, which is exactly what a typical reef aquascape provides. Give it live rock with gaps roughly the width of a quarter for the disc, plus a sandbed of an inch and a half or more. Diet is detritus, uneaten food, decaying matter, and biofilm.

Best for any established Caribbean reef tank. Check stock.

Red Brittle Starfish

Care level: Beginner Reef safe: Yes Arm span: 8–10 inches

Same scavenging credentials as the standard brittle star with reddish-brown coloration that shows up far better when the arms come out at night. If you’ve never done a midnight tank check with a red flashlight, this is the species that makes it worth doing.

Red Serpent Starfish

Care level: Beginner to intermediate • Reef safe: Yes • Arm span: ~10 inches • Minimum tank: 30 gallons

Sold in the trade as Ophioderma squamosissimum, a Caribbean species with a documented range from Florida to Belize. Deep red to reddish-orange, smooth-armed, and more willing to come out where you can see it than most brittle stars. It’s the priciest star we carry and the one people buy for display value as much as cleanup work. Feeding is the same as any other serpent star, though in a low-bioload system we target-feed weekly.

Harlequin and Slimy Orange Serpent Stars

Both are standard Caribbean scavengers with unusual coloring. The Harlequin Serpent Starfish has banded, patterned arms that hold their contrast in captivity rather than fading. The Slimy Orange Serpent Starfish is a vivid orange with a velvety arm texture, and it’s consistently one of our most requested stars.

Care for both is identical to any other Caribbean serpent star. Availability on both moves week to week.

Caribbean Sea Stars: Read This Before You Buy

Sea stars are a different animal in every sense, and two of the ones we carry are not reef safe. We’d rather tell you that here than have you find out after it’s in the tank.

The Knobby Red Starfish (an Echinaster species, also called the Red Thorny Sea Star) is vivid red with raised knobs across the body and unlike anything else in the Caribbean trade. It will also eat invertebrates, sessile organisms, and soft coral tissue. In a species tank or a FOWLR (fish only with reef rock aquarium) system with live rock and no corals, it’s a centerpiece. In a mixed reef, it’s a problem.

The Key West Starfish is a peaceful, slow-moving grazer from the shallow sandy flats we collect on, processing biofilm and detritus across a wide area. It will also take small invertebrates, clam mantles, and soft coral tissue in a reef setting. Same verdict: excellent in FOWLR and species displays, wrong for a coral tank.

Is the Green Brittle Star Dangerous?

Not as dangerous as its reputation. The green brittle star, sold in the trade as Ophiarachna incrassata, gets blamed for every "my brittle star ate my goby" thread on the forums. What's actually going on is size and opportunity. It grows to 14 to 18 inches across, bigger than any other star we sell, and it's an opportunistic feeder. A large, underfed star that comes across a sleeping goby at two in the morning will take it. A well-fed one generally leaves the goby alone. The trapping behavior behind the reputation is real and was documented by marine biologist James Morin in 1988, written up by Smithsonian echinoderm researcher Dr. Christopher Mah on The Echinoblog, though it needs a hungry star and a fish small enough to fit inside its disc.

You do need to think carefully before this one goes in your tank. It's the only star we carry that isn't reef safe, and it can pick off small gobies, firefish, blennies, small wrasses, ornamental shrimp, and snails, though it won't bother soft, LPS, or SPS corals.

Plan on a 75-gallon minimum, tankmates large enough to be uninteresting to it like tangs, angels, or groupers, and regular meaty feedings so it isn't hunting for its dinner. Full care details, current size, and compatibility notes are on the Green" Serpent Starfish product page.

Our Caribbean brittle and serpent stars are a different animal. They're scavengers, they stay far smaller, and this behavior has never been documented in them.

That last row is the one that kills brittle stars, so it gets its own paragraph.

Copper is lethal to echinoderms without exception: brittle stars, serpent stars, sea stars, urchins, sea cucumbers. There is no safe therapeutic level. If you need to treat a display tank for ich, every invertebrate has to come out to a copper-free system before you dose, and that includes copper-containing additives, not only medications. If you’ve ever run copper in a tank, be aware it binds to rock and sand and leaches back out for a long time afterward.

Acclimation

Rushed acclimation is the leading cause of brittle star death in the first 48 hours. These animals handle salinity and temperature swings worse than most fish and many corals.

Float the sealed bag for 15 to 20 minutes to equalize temperature. Then pour the animal and its shipping water into a clean bucket and start a drip line from the display at one to two drops per second. Run it for a full 45 to 60 minutes. When the volume has roughly doubled, discard the container water rather than adding any of it to your tank, and move the star with a soft net or a cupped hand. Place it low, near rockwork.

Then leave it alone. Expect it to hide for three to seven days while it settles. Our holding water still won’t match yours exactly, and the drip is what closes that gap.

Feeding

In a mature reef tank with a normal fish load, brittle and serpent stars feed themselves. They’re generalist scavengers working through uneaten pellets, frozen food debris, fish waste, and the constant fall of organic particles any established system produces. No target feeding required.

The exception is a very clean, low-bioload system. Heavily skimmed SPS (Small Polyp Stony coral) tanks with two or three small fish sometimes don’t generate enough waste. Signs your star is short on food: arms visibly thinning over time, arm loss with no obvious stress trigger, a drop in nighttime activity, or a previously active star that stops emerging for a week or more.

If you see those, feed once or twice a week. Small pieces of thawed krill or mysis, chopped prawn or marine whitefish, or clam on the half shell all work. Turn the pumps off for 15 to 20 minutes, place the food near the base of the arms with a baster, and let the star find it by smell.

Resist feeding on a schedule in a normally stocked tank. Extra food is extra nutrient, and you’ll trade a theoretical feeding problem for an actual algae one.

Tank Setup and Tankmates

Twenty gallons is workable for a single specimen; 30 or more if you want two or three. Sand should be an inch and a half to three inches deep. Bare-bottom tanks aren’t ideal, since the star ends up living entirely on rock and skipping the substrate work you bought it for.

Rockwork needs gaps large enough for the central disc. How much rock matters more than how it’s arranged. Flow should be moderate and indirect; a powerhead blasting a low-flow zone makes that zone useless for nighttime foraging. Lighting is irrelevant to their health, and they’ll hide during the day regardless. If you want to actually see one, do a tank check with a red flashlight 30 to 60 minutes after lights out.

Safe tankmates: most reef fish, including gobies, blennies, anthias, cardinalfish, tangs, chromis, basslets, and firefish. Cleaner, peppermint, and banded coral shrimp are fine. All standard Caribbean hermits and reef-safe snails. All Caribbean urchins. All corals, including delicate SPS and LPS (Large Polyp Stony coral).

Use caution with: nano fish under an inch alongside a large 8-inch-plus serpent star, where the risk is low but not zero. Freshly molted small invertebrates. Seahorse systems, where brittle stars patrol the same substrate zones seahorses rest in at night. In a large, well-zoned tank it can work, but we don’t recommend it for dedicated seahorse setups.

Don’t pair with: harlequin shrimp, which specialize in eating echinoderms and will methodically dismantle a brittle star. Large puffers, large triggers, and harlequin tuskfish, all of which eat them outright. Large lionfish may take small specimens. And any copper-medicated system.

A 30-gallon Caribbean reef with a moderate fish load runs well on one brittle or serpent star, 10 to 15 snails across three species, and 10 to 15 hermits across two. Scale from there.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a brittle star and a serpent star?

Both are in Class Ophiuroidea, so they’re the same scientific group. Brittle stars have spiny, segmented arms; serpent stars have smooth, rounded ones. Behavior, reef safety, care, and cleanup function are essentially identical. The names describe how they look, not what they do.

Are brittle stars reef safe?

Caribbean brittle stars and serpent stars are reef safe. They don’t harm corals, anemones, or normally sized fish. The “brittle star eats fish” reputation belongs to Ophiarachna incrassata, a Pacific species we don’t carry.

Will a green brittle star eat my fish?

Only if it’s Ophiarachna incrassata. Caribbean serpent stars are scavengers and don’t show that trapping behavior. Confirm the species and collection region before buying any green brittle star, from any retailer.

What do brittle stars eat in an aquarium?

Uneaten fish food, detritus, decaying organic matter, fish waste, and small dead organisms in the substrate and rockwork. In low-bioload systems, supplement once or twice weekly with krill, mysis, or chopped marine protein.

How many brittle stars should I have?

One per 20 to 30 gallons is a safe baseline. Two or three can coexist in a 50-gallon-plus system with enough organic input. Overstocking leads to competition, starvation, and arm loss.

Why is my brittle star losing arms?

Autotomy is a normal defense response, but in a tank it usually points to a sudden salinity change, rushed acclimation, copper exposure, harassment from a tankmate, or elevated nitrate or ammonia. Test everything, starting with copper, salinity, and nitrate. If parameters are clean, leave the star alone and let it regrow.

Do brittle stars come out during the day?

Rarely. They hide in rockwork under your lights and emerge after dark. You can condition one to come out earlier with consistent daytime feeding near its hiding spot, but it takes weeks and most stay nocturnal anyway.

How long do brittle stars live in a reef tank?

Reported lifespans in well-maintained systems run five to ten years, which makes them one of the better-value invertebrates in the hobby.

Can brittle stars live with seahorses?

Not in a dedicated seahorse system. They patrol the same substrate zones seahorses rest in at night. In a 75-gallon-plus tank with well-separated zones it’s possible with monitoring, but we wouldn’t build a seahorse tank around
