The Red Serpent Starfish (Ophioderma squamosissimus) is a vibrant and active Caribbean echinoderm prized for its rich red to reddish-orange coloration and graceful, snake-like arms. Native to the tropical western Atlantic, including Florida and the Caribbean, this hardy scavenger spends its time exploring live rock and sandy substrates in search of biofilm, detritus, and leftover food. Its striking color and constant movement make it an eye-catching addition to both reef and fish-only marine aquariums.

Red Serpent Starfish thrive in established aquariums with stable water parameters, abundant live rock, and plenty of crevices for shelter. Hardy, peaceful, and beneficial as part of a clean-up crew, they are an excellent choice for hobbyists of all experience levels.

Reef Compatibility

Reef Aquarium: Excellent choice for reef aquariums.

Corals: Completely safe with soft, LPS, and SPS corals. Red Serpent Starfish do not feed on healthy coral tissue.

Fish Tank Mates: Peaceful and compatible with most reef-safe fish, including clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, wrasses, tangs, and dwarf angelfish. Avoid housing with large predatory fish such as triggers, puffers, large wrasses, or hawkfish that may prey on or injure the starfish.

Sensitive Invertebrates: Generally safe with snails, hermit crabs, cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, and other common reef invertebrates. They primarily scavenge for detritus and uneaten food, while healthy invertebrates are typically ignored.

It should only be introduced into mature aquariums with stable salinity and water chemistry.
