Serpent Starfish (Ophioderma cinereum)

Hand-collected by our team, the Serpent Starfish (Ophioderma cinereum) is a hardy, active echinoderm that brings constant movement and natural cleanup benefits to marine aquariums. Native to the Caribbean and Florida, this fascinating starfish spends its days gliding across live rock and sand in search of biofilm, detritus, and leftover food. Its long, flexible arms allow it to move surprisingly quickly, making it one of the most active starfish species commonly kept in aquariums.

Serpent Starfish thrive in mature aquariums with stable water parameters and plenty of rockwork to explore. Peaceful and easy to care for, they make an excellent addition to both reef and fish-only marine systems.

Reef Compatibility

Reef Aquarium: Excellent choice for reef aquariums.

Corals: Completely safe with both soft and stony corals. They will not nip or consume healthy coral tissue.

Fish Tank Mates: Peaceful and compatible with most community reef fish, including clownfish, gobies, blennies, wrasses, tangs, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with large predatory fish such as triggers, puffers, large wrasses, or hawkfish that may prey on their arms.

Sensitive Invertebrates: Generally safe with snails, hermit crabs, cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, and other common reef invertebrates. Very small, weak, or newly introduced invertebrates may occasionally be disturbed while the starfish is scavenging, but healthy specimens are typically ignored.

The Serpent Starfish is one of the easiest starfish species to keep, making it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced reef keepers alike. It should only be added to well-established aquariums with stable salinity and water chemistry, as starfish are sensitive to sudden parameter changes. Slow drip acclimation is strongly recommended.
